Re: Expert available to discuss Bush's war rhetoric
Beverly Sauer, professor of management at The Johns Hopkins University and author of "The Rhetoric of Risk: Technical Documentation in Hazardous Environments," is available to dissect and comment on the rhetoric of President Bush and other leaders as the nation continues the war against Saddam Hussein and Iraq.
An expert on risk communication and hazard communication, Sauer has tracked changes in the president's rhetoric since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. She has been quoted in the media around such news events as the anthrax crisis and the 2003 State of the Union Address.
An expert on body language and gesture, Sauer comments, "Bush's rhetoric is more measured but visibly more scripted as he attempts to calm the nation and justify the war effort to the American public."
Sauer is currently developing a center for corporate crisis communication in the School of Professional Studies at Johns Hopkins. Crisis management begins with a clear plan and involves all stakeholders before a crisis, she argues. "The post office [during the anthrax crisis] provides a clear example of how communicating with stakeholders early and often can improve crisis communication following a disaster," Sauer says. Formerly, she was associate professor of English and rhetoric at Carnegie Mellon University.
