Colleen Dunlavy, a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, may be able to offer insight and expert comment for your coverage of recent corporate scandals.

Over the past few months, a handful of major American corporations have been engulfed in scandals and accounting frauds, while numerous others remain under federal investigation.

But the current situations involving WorldCom, Enron, Arthur Andersen and ImClone-Martha Stewart have been played out many times in the past. In fact, the history of American business has been dominated by cycles of roaring success, corruption, followed by government-led reform.

Dunlavy, a UW-Madison professor of history, has extensively studied the history of capitalism, related scandals and their influence on economic and political change.

Dunlavy can provide a historical perspective on corporate excess, reasons why executives cheat, how the current climate of scandal compares to others in the 1920s and 1980s and ways the government has responded during past crises.
