Newswise — Children don’t understand that images they see on TV are half a world away. For a child, how much is an abstraction, and how much is real?

Josh Klapow, Ph.D., who is currently teaching a class on communicating about crises, can give parents general advice on how to discuss the current events in Egypt with children. Klapow will offer tips on how to handle questions and concerns from children of various age groups, ways to make judgment calls on what to tell children and what not to, and also how to reassure children they are safe. Klapow is a clinical psychologist and associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has extensive experience with TV and print interviews.
