We all do it without thinking. In just seconds we size people up and others do it to us. How reliable are the snap judgments that our minds always make? Are first impressions reliable?

"Most of us believe that first impressions are wrong and inaccurate," says David Kenny, a professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut.

But a series of experiments that Kenny has conducted suggest that very often first impressions have a surprising degree of validity.
