The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) is pleased to announce the representation of five major archive photographers from its collections in the new "Masters of Photography" panel of twenty stamps issued by the United States Postal Service. They include groundbreaking photographers Ansel Adams (1902-1984), W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978), Paul Strand (1890-1976), Edward Weston (1886-1958) and Garry Winogrand (1928-1984).

The collected works of the master photographers have been the basis and inspiration for numerous exhibitions and publications including, from the past year, including: "Ansel Adams at 100" (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, publshed by Little, Brown); "Dream Street: W. Eugene Smith's Pittsburgh Photographs" (Carnegie Museum of Art, published by W.W. Norton); and a CCP symposium and two-part exhibition, "The Garry Winogrand Game of Photography: The Known and The New."

Acquired in 1975, the Ansel Adams Archive is among the five founding archives of CCP. The other founding archives were those of Wynn Bullock, Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind and Frederick Sommer. Today, CCP is home to more than 60 major archives, representing some of the most notable American photographers of the twentieth century. The fine print collection at CCP contains in excess of 60,000 prints from more than 2,000 photographers.

The Postal Service stamp issue coincides with the publication of a new CCP collections guide, "Original Sources: Art and Archives at the Center for Creative Photography." Ansel Adams Archive

One of the five founding archives of CCP in 1975, the Ansel Adams Archive holds papers, photographic materials, audio tapes, interview transcripts and memorabilia from Adams's work as photographer, author, teacher and conservationist. In addition, it includes more than 2,500 fine prints.

W. Eugene Smith Archive

With approximately 3,500 fine prints and hundreds of study prints, the W. Eugene Smith Archive (acquired in 1977) also includes an extensive collection of correspondence, negatives, project files, trip journals, book maquettes and artifacts, such as Smith's typewriter and camera equipment.

Paul Strand Collection

Acquired in 1976, the Paul Strand Collection includes Strand's personal papers, correspondence, miniature book maquettes, transparencies of his photograph collection and 9 scrapbooks that document events in the art world from 1902 to 1975. CCP also holds 806 fine prints and study prints by Strand.

Edward Weston Archive

Boasting the original manuscripts for his daybooks, the Edward Weston Archive (acquired in 1981) contains personal papers, photographic materials and letters from photographers Ansel Adams, Tina Modotti, Charles Sheeler, Willard Van Dyke, Brett Weston and others. There are 2,260 fine prints in all in this archive.

Garry Winogrand Archive

The Garry Winogrand Archive (acquired in 1983) is the largest and most significant collection of Winogrand's work in the world. It consists of approximately 25,000 photographs, 20,000 contact sheets, 120,000 negatives and 30,500 35mm color slides, personal papers and related research materials.

The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona in Tucson is an archive, museum and research institution, dedicated to photography as an art form and cultural record. CCP holds more archives and individual works by 20th-century North American photographers than any other museum in the nation, including the archives of more than sixty major photographers, including Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, W. Eugene Smith and Edward Weston, whose prints are the centerpiece of an art collection numbering more than 60,000 works by 2,000 photographers.

CCP has an integrated program of preservation, access and education that celebrates the history of photography and its contemporary practice. Visitors enjoy a changing exhibition program, research center, educational programs, library, museum store and public access to the vast collection through the renowned PrintViewing program.
