Georgia State University took top honors at the 1998 Arthur Andersen Tax Challenge(r) National competition, held November 20-22 in St. Charles, Ill. Georgia State's team in the graduate division presented the best overall tax solution for a fictitious client with a myriad of business dealings and personal financial considerations, earning the School of Accountancy in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State $20,000 in scholarship funds from the Andersen Foundation.

The university's undergraduate team also won honorable mention at the National Competition and brought home $1,500 in scholarship funds. To advance to the national round of competition, both teams competed with a field of 114 college and university teams during the Regional Competition held October 24 at nine university sites across the country. The collegiate tax competition, held annually at Andersen's Center for Professional Education in St. Charles, Ill., tests students' federal tax law knowledge and planning ability. The 10 competing graduate level and 10 competing undergraduate level teams were required to digest and assimilate a wealth of client information in reviewing the client's current tax position, perform required calculations, and recommend tax planning strategies. Added to the challenge was the fact that the students had only seven hours to complete their work.

"We are extremely proud of both of our graduate and undergraduate teams," said Chris Fenn, team advisor. "Their success reflects hard work, strong team effort, and a solid learning foundation obtained at Georgia State's J. Mack Robinson College of Business."

Approximately 167 students are enrolled in the School of Accountancy at the graduate level with 792 students enrolled at the undergraduate level. Since 1992, the School's prestigious Masters of Taxation program has won more cash awards from national student competitions than any other university. The program offers 15 different courses in taxation. Georgia State's part-time MBA program is currently ranked fourth best in the nation by U.S.News&World Report.
