Newswise — There's more to getting ready for a summer ride than pulling the bike out the garage and dusting off the cobwebs.

Josh Whitmore, director for Western Carolina University's Base Camp Cullowhee and competitive cyclist, can offer tips on how to get your bike in shape for summer, from inflating tires to the right air pressure to sliding a displaced chain back onto the gears.

Whitmore is an avid road and mountain bike cyclist who frequents top cycling attractions near the Cullowhee, N.C., campus, including the Blue Ridge Parkway and Tsali Recreation Area, which biking magazines have cited as having some of the best trails in the country.

Whitmore first competed in cycling at age 14 and later raced professionally. He worked at a Bicycle Maintenance tent at races and community events. Whitmore will represent the United States this summer at an international mountain biking competition in Canada.
