LIVE ON THE WEB: FORMER GERMAN CHANCELLOR HELMUT SCHMIDT TO DELIVER RICE COMMENCEMENT SPEECH

HOUSTON, May 12, 1999 -- Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt--a leading advocate of the European Monetary Unit (EMU) and an influential voice in European politics and economics--will deliver the 1999 commencement address at Rice University on Saturday, May 15, which will be broadcast live on the Web.

Commencement is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. (CDT). Schmidt should begin speaking shortly before 9 a.m. (CDT) from Rice's open-air Academic Quadrangle.

To listen to the event online at http://www.rice.edu/rtv/, you must use "RealAudio Player," a free, downloadable software. The Rice site contains a link to the Web page from which the free RealAudio Player can be downloaded. With the RealAudio Player installed on your computer, simply click on the links located at http://www.rice.edu/rtv/. The file will begin "streaming" or sending the speech to your computer.

Schmidt served as chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1974 through 1982. He remained involved in German politics as a member of the Bundestag until he stepped down in 1987. He is currently publisher of the influential weekly newspaper Die Zeit and remains a very influential voice in European economics and politics.
