Houston Astros Baseball Club owner and Texas business leader Drayton McLane Jr., Chairman of the McLane Group, will be the keynote speaker for The University of Tulsa's 103rd commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 8, 1999. More than 700 students will receive diplomas during TU's graduation ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the TU campus.

McLane's business career began at an early age while working with his grandfather at their family grocery business in Cameron, Texas. After graduating from Baylor University and Michigan State University, he returned to the family business, McLane Company, and made significant changes. He moved the company to Temple, Texas, where it blossomed and over the years became a multi-billion dollar company.

Throughout his distinguished career, McLane has received many significant honors, but most recently he was presented the Distinguished Herbert Hoover Award from Food Distributor's International, and the Golden Plate award in 1997 from the American Academy of Achievement. He has been inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. In 1997, McLane received an honorary doctorate from MSU.

McLane's commitment to help others far extends beyond the baselines of the Astrodome. He currently serves on the boards of Boy Scouts of America, Children's Miracle Network, Chase Bank, Baylor University and Scott and White Hospital, among others.
