How does Mattel expanding Barbie’s universe reflect an ever-changing society?

As Mattel continues to release new versions of their line of more diverse Barbie dolls, the conversation about Barbie’s lifestyle has continued to evolve. Cayo Gamber, associate professor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the George Washington University, is available to provide her expert opinion based on her ongoing research on Barbie and specifically, the ways in which children (both boys and girls) engage with the dolls.  Gamber has also authored an array of publications that interrogate the role of popular culture in creating Western notions of girlhood and womanhood.
