KU DOLE INSTITUTE INVITES NATO SECRETARY GENERAL TO ATTEND 50TH ANNIVERSARY NATO CONFERENCE, SEPT. 9-11

LAWRENCE -- The Robert J. Dole Institute for Public Service and Public Policy at the University of Kansas will sponsor a conference Sept. 9, 10 and 11 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Titled "NATO: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," the conference will examine the role of the alliance during the Cold War, its adaptation to the present and its future role.

NATO Secretary General Javier Solana has been invited to present the keynote address. More than 20 participants, including members of Congress, foreign diplomats, university scholars, NATO staff, military personnel and international business executives will discuss political, economic and security issues surrounding NATO.

"Given Senator Dole's continuing role in Kosovo and the Balkans, it is most appropriate for the Dole Institute to organize this conference," said Burdett Loomis, interim director of the institute.

The conference will convene Thursday, Sept. 9, at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth with three panels of experts discussing the Ukraine and NATO enlargement.

On Friday, Sept. 10, the conference will move to the Kansas Union on the KU campus for panels on the topic of "NATO: Security and the New Europe." Experts will discuss NATO security issues and the alliance's relationship to European integration.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, the conference will reconvene at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park. The theme for the final day of the conference will be "NATO: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow."

Cooperating institutions and organizations include KU'S Center for Russian and East European Studies, Johnson County Community College, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and the International Relations Council of Kansas City.

The conference is public, although registration is required to attend on Saturday.
