This week China announced it will ease its much-maligned “one-child policy.” Texas A&M University Professor Dudley Poston specializes in the study of demography and has long studied China’s population issues. He can address questions surrounding this issue: Why is China modifying this policy? How will this change affect China and the rest of the world?

Dr. Poston has an insider’s view on the evolution of this policy as he personally trained demographers from China who are now back in their country, many of them in leadership positions in universities and the government. “I have been well aware that many of them have been recommending this and other modifications in the policy to the government for over a decade,” he says.
