BACKGROUND: American University experts are available to provide context and commentary on political crisis in Ukraine.
Anton Fedyashin, assistant professor and executive director of AU’s Initiative for Russian Culture, is an expert in Russian and Soviet history and current post-Soviet affairs. He can speak to how Yanukovich's government and the opposition have both mishandled the situation and allowed radical elements to emerge and dominate the Euromaidan movement. Fluent in Russian and French.
Keith Darden, associate professor in AU’s School of International Service, researches nationalism, state-building, and the politics of Russia and Eurasia. Darden is among the U.S.’s leading experts and scholars on regional institutions formed among the post-Soviet states including Ukraine. Specifically, he can discuss regional and national divides along what he calls the “imperial footprint.” Darden recently had opinion pieces in the International New York Times and Washington Post’s Monkey Cage blog concerning the conflict in Ukraine.
James Goldgeier, School of International Service dean, is an expert in contemporary international relations, American foreign policy, U.S.-Russia relations, the European Union, transatlantic security and NATO. He is the author of the critically acclaimed, America Between the Wars: From 11/9 to 9/11 (co-authored with Derek Chollet), Power and Purpose: U.S. Policy toward Russia after the Cold War (co-authored with Michael McFaul—The U.S.’s current ambassador to Russia.)
