Newswise — The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) is honored to announce this year's inaugural class of distinguished Fellows. Lloyd Paul Aiello, M.D., PhD, head of the Joslin Section on Eye Research, was among the group of members recognized for their accomplishments, leadership and contributions to the Association. ARVO awarded two levels of Fellows, Gold and Silver, determined by a rigorous point system.
By accepting this honor, ARVO anticipates that Fellows will continue to serve as role models and mentors for individuals pursuing careers in vision and ophthalmology research and to further ARVO's vision "to facilitate the advancement of vision research and the prevention and cure of disorders of the visual system worldwide." This includes advancing basic and clinical knowledge and serving as the leading international forum for vision research and the primary advocate for vision science worldwide.
"We are very excited to offer this new prestige to our membership. We know that it will galvanize current members and inspire future ones," said ARVO President, Todd P. Margolis M.D., Ph.D.
"It is wonderful to be recognized by ARVO for our research contributions in the area of diabetic retinopathy," said Dr. Aiello. "This honor reflects the hard work and consistent dedication of all members of our basic and clinical research teams in the continuing effort to reduce the visual burden of diabetes in our patients."
The ARVO fellows will be officially inducted at the Association's Annual Meeting this May.
Dr. Aiello serves as Director of Joslin's Beetham Eye Institute, Head of Joslin's Section on Eye Research, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Aiello received his medical degree and doctorate degree in Biochemistry from Boston University School of Medicine. He did his residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital before coming to the Joslin Diabetes Center, where he completed a clinical vitreo-retinal and a research fellowship, joining the staff in 1994.
Dr. Aiello is the author of 112 original papers, 183 publications and the recipient of 38 national and international honors and awards. He has served as Chair for two Medical Science Review Committees of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the American Diabetes Association Lions SightFirst Diabetic Retinopathy Research Program and the National Institutes of Health sponsored Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network.
