Newswise — More than 500 graduates will receive bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees during the 139th Spring Commencement of Fayetteville State University (FSU). The event will be held at 10 a.m. in the Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium on the FSU campus.

Delivering the commencement address will be North Carolina Lt. Governor Beverly Perdue. Perdue is the second highest-ranking politician in the State of North Carolina. Since taking office in 2001, Perdue has been busy working to improve the state of North Carolina. She has been instrumental in creating the Business and Education Technology Alliance, a public-private partnership whose mission is to bring technology skills, infrastructure and training to North Carolina's schools, teachers, and communities. She received the President's Award and Leadership Award from the North Carolina Association of Educators in honor of her efforts to support quality teachers and education in North Carolina.

Before Perdue was elected lieutenant governor, she served in the North Carolina House of Representatives for two terms and the North Carolina Senate for five terms. By the authority of the State Constitution, in her capacity as lieutenant governor, Perdue now serves as President of the North Carolina Senate. Perdue was elected North Carolina's Lt. Governor in 2000.

Perdue is married to small businessman Bob Eaves, Jr. She has two sons, Garrett and Emmett Perdue. She received her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Kentucky and earned a master's and doctorate from the University of Florida.Presiding over the exercise will be FSU Chancellor T.J. Bryan. Dr. Bryan is the tenth chief executive officer of FSU and the first woman elected by The University of North Carolina Board of Governors to lead the 139-year-old institution as Chancellor. She is also the first African-American woman appointed as head of a University of North Carolina institution. Dr. Bryan assumed her new role at the second-oldest public university in the Old North State on July 1, 2003.
