Newswise — University of Maryland journalism students from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism are getting their first taste of national politics by covering the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Capital News Service (CNS) Annapolis Bureau Director Rafael Lorente directed coverage of the Democrats in Denver, Colorado with a group of four Maryland graduate journalism students (including an online specialist) who are entering the Annapolis and Washington, D.C. bureaus this fall. Washington Bureau Director Adrianne Flynn is directing a similar group of four graduate students in St. Paul, Minnesota. All the students plan to graduate this December.

CNS clients include 14 daily newspapers and wire services, more than 60 weekly and monthly newspapers and newsletters, a news-radio station, a statewide public television network and several online services. The students will file stories, photos and, for the first time, videos for their clients and for Maryland Newsline, the CNS online news magazine that focuses on politics and public policy. The students will also be blogging for Maryland Newsline and Newsdesk.

This will be the third convention covered by CNS for its clients. In 2004, nearly 40 reports were filed from both conventions. Flynn predicts that as in previous conventions, this will be "an exciting opportunity" for her students.
