MISSOURI GOV. MEL CARNAHAN TO SPEAK DURING UMR'S 126TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT, MAY 15

ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan will present the commencement address during the University of Missouri-Rolla's 126th Annual Commencement, Saturday, May 15.

About 500 degrees will be awarded during commencement, which will be held at 2 p.m. at UMR's football field. In case of inclement weather, commencement will be held in the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.

Carnahan was elected Missouri's 51st governor in November 1992. He was reelected in November 1996.

He was born in Birch Tree, Mo. in 1934. Carnahan graduated from George Washington University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving as an agent for the Office of Special Investigation during the Korean War. After returning to Missouri, he entered law school at the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated in 1959 with Law Review and Order of the Coif honors.

At age 26, Carnahan was elected as a municipal judge in Rolla, Mo. Two years later he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives. He was elected Majority Floor Leader in his second term. He left the House after his second two-year term and returned to his law practice in Rolla.

In 1980, Carnahan was elected state treasurer. In 1988, he was elected as Missouri's 42nd lieutenant governor.
