MITT ROMNEY TO GIVE U.'S 130TH COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

Mitt Romney, who heads one of the nation's largest private holding companies, will give the commencement address at the University of Utah's 130th annual commencement May 7.

More than 6,000 degrees will be awarded to 1999 graduates in the Jon M. Huntsman Center on May 7.

No stranger to Utah, Romney studied as an undergraduate at Brigham Young University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1971 with highest honors.

The 1994 Republican nominee for United States Senate from Massachusetts, Romney is the founder and CEO of Bain Capital Inc., a private holding company with portfolio company revenues in excess of $13 billion.

Organized in 1984, Bain Capital has acquired or started more than 120 companies including, Staples, Domino's Pizza, Brookstone, Totes, FTD Florists and Sealy Corp. Bain's $3.8 billion capital under management includes private (over) equity, high-yield assets, mezzanine debt and public equities.

From 1978 to 1984, Romney was a vice president of Bain & Company Inc., the international management consulting firm. In 1990, he returned to the company as its CEO to lead its highly successful turnaround. Today, Bain & Company has 25 offices worldwide and more than 2,000 employees.

This past February, Romney was named president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002.

In 1975 Romney was awarded an MBA from Harvard Business School and was named a Baker Scholar. In 1975, he also received his juris doctorate, cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
