Newswise — "Monetary Policy Amid Economic Turbulence" is the focus of a free public conference to be held 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Bryan Cave Moot Court Room. Anheuser-Busch Hall, Danforth Campus, Washington University in St. Louis.

Designed as a service to the community, the program will provide the latest information on current issues in monetary policy -- the processes used by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank to regulate the nation's money supply and interest rates in an effort to control inflation and strengthen the economy. The forum will include presentations, panel discussions and an audience question-and-answer session led by experts in economic policy and the banking system.

Richard Sylla, Ph.D., the Henry Kaufman Professor of The History of Financial Institutions and Markets in the Department of Economics at New York University (NYU), will open the event with a speech on "Our Great Recession in the Mirror of the Great Depression." Thomas Cooley, Ph.D., the Paganelli-Bull Professor of Economics and dean emeritus of the NYU Stern School of Business, will speak at 3 p.m. on “The Challenges for Monetary Policy in the aftermath of the Crisis.”

Following an audience Q&A session and a brief break, the program concludes with a monetary policy panel discussion beginning at 4:20 p.m. Panelists include James Bullard, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis; Joel Prakken, Chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers LLC, a St. Louis-based economic forecasting firm; and Costas Azariadis, Ph.D., professor of economics in Arts & Sciences and Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor at Washington University.

The event is sponsored by the St. Louis Gateway Chapter of the National Association of Business Economics and the Washington University Department of Economics, the Undergraduate Economics Association, and the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government, and Public Policy, all in Arts & Sciences.

Space is limited and advance registration is requested. Driving directions and a parking information will be provided on registration. On-site registration will open at 2 p.m.
