Newswise — Mount Saint Mary College will confer 618 degrees at its 41st annual commencement ceremonies Saturday (May 22).

Dr. Dennis J. Selkoe, an authority on Alzheimer's Disease, will deliver the address at the 10 a.m. ceremony. Executive recruiter Gerard R. Roche will speak at the 2 p.m. ceremony. The Mount will confer 429 bachelor's degrees and 189 master's degrees.

The Mount will confer the honorary degree of doctor of humane letters on Selkoe and Roche. The college will present the Trustees Award for Distinguished Service to Sr. Agnes Boyle, O.P., Vice President for Academic Affairs. Selkoe has devoted his career to the study of Alzheimer's disease. He and colleagues have isolated aspects of Alzheimer's and developed drugs to fight the disease.

Selkoe is a Professor of Neurologic Diseases at Harvard Medical School and co-director of the Center for Neurological Diseases at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He has received much recognition for his efforts including the Leadership and Excellence in Alzheimer's Disease Award from the National Institutes of Health and the Pioneer Award from the Alzheimer's Association.

Roche, senior chairman of the international search firm of Heidrick & Struggles, is known as the world's premier executive recruiter. Several years ago his peers chose him as "Headhunter of the Century."

In more than 35 years as an executive recruiter, Roche has worked with hundreds of corporations and has identified top executives throughout the world in almost every function and industry. He has placed more CEOs than any other recruiter.

The Chappaqua resident sits on the board of directors of The National Mentoring Partnership and the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America. He is a former member of the executive council of The Inner-City Scholarship Fund and the executive board of University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School. He served as chair of the board of trustees of the University of Scranton.

Boyle has devoted her life to education. She will step down June 30 after three decades as academic dean to pursue other endeavors at the Mount. Under her leadership, the Mount developed more than a dozen undergraduate programs, including professional programs such as communication arts, business management and administration, and computer science. In addition the college's extensive education programs were revised during her tenure. She also helped launch the Mount's graduate programs, in business, education and nursing.

The Philadelphia native started teaching at the Mount as an assistant professor of education in 1963 and served as chair of the Division of Education from 1963-74. She served as principal of Bishop Dunn Memorial School, an adjunct facility of the college, from 1969-74.

Both ceremonies will be held outdoors under a tent on Kaplan Field.
