Newswise — The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and SNAPforSeniors® today announced the launch of the NAELA Senior Housing Locator, an online navigational tool with listings for licensed senior housing communities in the country.

Consumers and professionals will now have access to the NAELA Senior Housing Locator through a link on www.naela.org. The online tool allows users to search a database of more than 60,000 senior housing listings by city, county, ZIP code, street address or facility name. NAELA leaders see it as an important addition to its suite of resources, as members often help seniors during the transition from the home to senior housing.

The U.S. Census Bureau projects the number of Americans 65 and older to top 40 million by 2010, intensifying the need for a simple way to find senior housing. "NAELA's vision is to be the recognized leader inspiring and empowering elder law attorneys to enhance the quality of life for seniors," said Craig Reaves, NAELA's President. "The Senior Housing Locator is an example of NAELA's dedication to helping our members best serve the unique needs of their clients by simplifying the process of finding appropriate housing anywhere in the nation."

In working with families, the elder law attorney assists clients in planning for possible long-term care needs, including at-home care, assisted living or nursing home care. Locating the appropriate type of care, coordinating public and private resources to finance the cost of care and working to ensure the client's right to quality care are all part of the elder law practice.

Similar to the real estate industry's Multiple Listing Service, the online service functions much like a traditional search engine. NAELA visitors can search the most current and objective database of assisted living communities, nursing homes, residential care facilities, continuing care retirement communities and a growing list of independent living communities. Visitors can also search based on criteria such as lifestyle amenities, care needs, diet, languages spoken and health conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.

"Older Americans turn to elder law attorneys because they have the focused training necessary to provide guidance during difficult transitions such as a move to senior housing," said Derek Preston, CEO of SNAPforSeniors. "Along with offering advanced search tools to narrow options by care and amenities offered, the NAELA Senior Housing Locator helps families coordinate long-distance care decisions by connecting them with resources across the country."
