Below I'm sharing comments on Sudan made by Professor of the Practice of Mediation Laurie Nathan of Notre Dame's Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. He is a senior mediation advisor to the United Nations. He serves on the UN Academic Advisory Council on Mediation and is the lead designer and trainer of the UN High Level Mediation Course. He has participated in high-level peacemaking efforts in Africa and helped design the mediation units of the African Union and African sub-regional bodies.

"The situation in Sudan remains grave and volatile. Following the coup in April, a growing number of people have been killed and detained by security forces. Stabilization and progress towards the restoration of constitutional rule depend on the mediation being conducted by the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Much can be learned from previous mediations in African coups in addressing the developing situation in Sudan. The AU, IGAD and their international partners must apply strong pressure on the coup regime, and mediators need to facilitate negotiations as a way out of the crisis."
