Nuclear Threat Unlikely

Some nuclear weapons once held by the former Soviet Union are unaccounted for. Now, President Bush has announced that Osama bin Laden is seeking nuclear weapons. Could bin Laden obtain the materials needed for a nuclear weapon? "Unless bin Laden acquires an entire weapons system, it would be difficult for him to actually weaponize nuclear materials," says UAB international security expert Cassady Craft, Ph.D., author of "Weapons of Peace, Weapons of War." "No organization, except a wealthy country, can make a nuclear weapon on its own, and it takes decades to build such a program. Iran and Iraq could help with some of the technologies needed, but they haven't successfully gotten to the weaponized stage yet."
