ONLINE YOUTH MINISTRY IS SUBJECT OF NEW BOOK

ROLLA, Mo. -- Using the Internet as a tool for youth ministry is the subject of a new book by a staff member at the University of Missouri-Rolla.

The book,"eMinistry: Connecting with the Net Generation," was published recently by Kregel Publications of Grand Rapids, Mich. The author, Andrew Careaga, is manager of public relations at UMR. He also is a freelance writer and volunteer youth pastor with a keen interest in how organizations and individuals use new technologies to spread their ideas.

Noting that religious groups have frequently taken advantage of new media to get their messages to the masses, Careaga explores how the Internet can help youth pastors communicate with today's teens. He also discusses the growing interest in "cyber-spirituality" -- free-wheeling religious discussions in Internet chat rooms and forums -- that is rekindling an interest in spirituality among young people.

"eMinistry" is Careaga's second book on the topic of religion and the Internet. His first, "E-vangelism: Sharing the Gospel in Cyberspace," was published in 1999 by Vital Issues Press, an imprint of Huntington House Publishers of Lafayette, La.

In addition to his duties as manager of public relations at UMR, Careaga is a volunteer youth pastor at Salem Faith Assembly Church in Salem, Mo.
