Newswise — Robert W. Lawless, the outgoing president at The University of Tulsa, will be the speaker at the university's 113th commencement on May 8. More than 700 students will receive diplomas during the ceremony at 2 p.m. in the Donald W. Reynolds Center, Eleventh Street and Harvard Avenue.

Also on May 8, TU will hold its baccalaureate services at 10 a.m. on the Sharp Memorial Chapel Plaza. The graduate school pinning will begin immediately following commencement in the Letterman's Lounge of the Reynolds Center. The School of Nursing awards ceremony will be at 5 p.m. in the Allen Chapman Activity Center.

The Phi Beta Kappa honor society initiation ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 7, in Sharp Chapel. The College of Law hooding ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 9, in the Reynolds Center. The speaker will be Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph M. Watt.

Lawless, the sixteenth president of The University of Tulsa, announced his retirement effective June 1. TU's academic reputation and its campus facilities have increased dramatically under Lawless' tenure. The 2004 edition of U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges" lists TU as 91st in the top category of national doctoral universities. USA Today listed TU as second in the nation, behind Notre Dame, for the highest graduation rates for student athletes in Division I-A athletics.

Under Lawless TU has undergone $83 million worth of additions and improvements to its campus facilities, including the Donald W. Reynolds Center, the Mabee Legal Information Center, the Boesche Legal Clinic, the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex, the Michael D. Case Tennis Center and the Fulton and Susie Collins Fitness Center.
