Newswise — Two prominent American University experts are available immediately to comment on the resignation of Fidel Castro and the future of Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations.

William M. LeoGrande is dean of AU's School of Public Affairs and a professor of government who has written widely in the field of Latin American politics and U.S. foreign policy, with a particular emphasis on Cuba. He is a renowned expert on Fidel Castro and has written extensively on Castro and the history of Cuba. LeoGrande is coeditor of both The Cuba Reader: The Making of a Revolutionary Society and Political Parties and Democracy in Central America. He also coauthored Confronting Revolution: Security through Diplomacy in Central America. His articles have appeared in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Latin American Research Review, the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, Le Monde and other journals and newspapers.

Philip Brenner is professor of international relations in AU's School of International Service, the director of the graduate program in U.S. foreign policy, and co-director of the university's interdisciplinary council on Latin America. He has personally interviewed Castro on three occasions. A specialist in U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America, he has been engaged in research and writing about Cuba and U.S.-Cuban relations since 1974. His latest book is A Contemporary Cuba Reader: Reinventing the Revolution(2007), which he coedited with William LeoGrande. Dr. Brenner also was a co-editor of The Cuba Reader: The Making of a Revolutionary Society and Political Parties and Democracy in Central America(1988). His 2002 study, Sad and Luminous Days: Cuba's Struggle with the Superpowers after the Missile Crisis (Rowman and Littlefield), with James G. Blight., explores the Cuban missile crisis from the Cuban perspective, and exposes a secret speech Castro delivered to the Cuban leadership in 1968. Brenner is also the author of From Confrontation to Negotiation: U.S. Relations with Cuba (1988).
