Newswise — Rep. Elijah Cummings, JD, a School of Law alumnus, an accomplished attorney and legislator, and a staunch advocate of the University, will be the keynote speaker at UMB's 2006 Commencement to be held on May 19th at 3 p.m. at 1st Mariner Arena.

Elijah Cummings, a congressman in Maryland's 7th district, was elected to Congress in 1996, and is currently a member of the House Task Force on Health Care Reform, the House Government Reform Committee, and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He is also the ranking member of the Criminal Justice, Drug Policy, and Human Resources Subcommittee, co-chair of the House AIDS Working Group, and immediate past chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.
