Newswise — Spent all year trying to figure out the Wii Fit your kids gave you for Christmas last year? Tired of them making fun of you for the iPod/disk drive incident from the year before that? This is your year to prove that you can get up to speed with the newest technology. Leading you down the path to tech savvy is Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone with some New Year’s tech resolutions:

1. First things first: time to get a smartphone. The world is going mobile and you are being left behind. There is now quite literally an app for everything, but if you’re just working with a PC you can’t take advantage of any of these convenient innovations. Can’t give up your beloved flip phone? You don’t have to. Now BlackBerry makes more than one model of flip smartphone, so you can maintain your comfort level but expand your horizons.

2. Get to know Android. Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications – and it is overtaking Apple. It’s open source, which means anyone can build apps for it, it’s supported by tech heavyweight Google, and boasts quick load times and high adoption rates amongst mobile producers.

3. If you already know Android, upgrade to Android 2.3. This new platform, out early 2011, takes gaming to the next level, increases the multimedia capabilities and introduces new forms of communication, such as scanning technology. If you want to be first you’ll need a Nexus Google phone.

4. Get into the tablet game. Skip right over the first generation iPads and Galaxy Tabs and opt instead for the second generation of tablets due out in 2011. You can expect new releases from Apple and Samsung, plus a Windows 7 tablet. All the kinks will be worked out and maybe they’ll even be cheaper.

5. Come June, Hold 3-D in the palm of your hand with the first handheld 3-D gaming system, Nintendo 3DS.

6. Get out of your phone and back into your life with Windows Phone 7. This new platform makes it easy for you to get quick updates and get on with things. And new apps are on their way for this up-and-coming platform (including DMZ’s own Sudoku 3D).

7. Take your home videos like a pro with Go Pro camera hero HD. Show your loved ones you live in high definition with 60 frames per second, a super-wide 135º lens that gives you music video-quality results with a fish-eye / panoramic type look. Water proof / shock proof with good battery life it’s great for adventurers and athletes. To show your movies in full def, use a dual-core cell phone tablet with HDMI output to hook them up to a 1080p TV anywhere you go.

8. A resolution for the techie: Build your own 3-D Imax theatre at home. Stop paying extra to see movies in 3-D and don’t waste your money on a finicky 3-D TV. See your own movies at home larger than life with the use of two projectors with polarized lens covers and some polarized glasses. There are plenty of online videos to guide you step by step through the process of setting up this home entertainment system. Now you can see all your media content in 3-D!
