Alumnus and Chancellor of NYC Schools Rudolph Crew UMass Commencement Speaker May 23 Graduate School Commencement is May 22

AMHERST, Mass. -- Rudolph Crew, chancellor of the Board of Education of the City of New York and a UMass alumnus, will deliver the main address at the 129th Commencement of the University of Massachusetts, to be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sun. May 23, in Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Jane Swift will attend the ceremonies to deliver the greetings of the commonwealth. Approximately 4,000 undergraduates are candidates for bachelor's degrees.

Crew received two graduate degrees from the University: an M.Ed. in urban education in 1972 and an Ed.D. in educational administration in 1978. At Commencement, he will be presented with an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

Nationally recognized for his work in implementing urban education reforms, Crew has served as chancellor of the New York City public schools since 1995. He is a leading proponent of performance-driven public education, which focuses on increasing the academic development of students through an emphasis on literacy, school-based responsibility, and parental involvement

Crew was superintendent of the Tacoma (Wash.) Public Schools District from 1993-95 and superintendent of the Sacramento (Calif.) City Unified School District from 1989-93. Prior to that, he was deputy superintendent and chief operational officer for that district's instructional programs. He also held various other posts in educational administration during his time in California. Earlier in his career, Crew was deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the Boston public schools, and served as coordinator of magnet programs/staff development at Boston English High School.

The University will hold a separate Commencement ceremony for nearly 1,300 master's and doctoral degree candidates at 10:30 a.m. Sat. May 22 in the William D. Mullins Memorial Center.

Also on May 22, approximately 100 students will receive associate of science degrees from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. The ceremony is at 2 p.m. in Bowker Auditorium. Keynote speaker is Paul F. Miller, 1970 Stockbridge alumnus and director of golf course operations at the Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord, Mass.

Other events taking place on Sat. May 22 include: Phi Beta Kappa Installation, Campus Center Auditorium, 2:30 p.m.; School of Nursing Pinning Ceremony, Fine Arts Center, 3 p.m.; and ROTC Joint Commissioning Ceremony, Bowker Auditorium, 5 p.m.
