New Brunswick, N.J. (Oct. 26, 2018) – Rutgers homeland security and intelligence expert John D. Cohen can provide insight and analysis on the pipe bombs mailed to well-known public figures this week.

“We are experiencing yet another security incident where it appears people are being targeted for acts of violence by someone who is potentially motivated by an ideological or political cause,” said Cohen, distinguished professor of professional practice in criminal justice in the School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. “The current political discourse may be influencing the behavior of mass casualty attackers – the same way extremist videos on the internet are doing so.”

Cohen, director of the university’s Center for Critical Intelligence Studies, has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and homeland security. He served as the Acting Under-Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) and Counterterrorism Coordinator for the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Cohen can comment on how packages and mail are screened for dangerous devices, including bombs. He is available at [email protected].
