Tom Dishion

Tom Dishion of the University of Oregon studies the factors that cause adolescents to move from relatively minor misbehavior to serious behavior problems. He can discuss the causes as well as interventions that are effective in reducing and preventing adolescent problem behavior. Director of a family-based prevention program that is funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse to prevent adolescent problem behavior, Dishion has recently focused on how peer dynamics play in those changes. An expert on interventions, he has found that interventions that segregate youth into groups may often have negative, long-term effects.
