Newswise — Joseph Fink, president of Dominican University of California, has announced that US Senator Barbara Boxer will be the 2004 commencement speaker on May 15, 2004.

Senator Boxer has been a champion of human rights, environmental protection, military procurement reform, medical research, and a woman's right to choose. Her name is attached to the Safe Drinking Water Act, the 1994 Crime Bill, the Violence Against Women Act, and the Patient's Bill of Rights.

Boxer has also led the Senate effort to support Afghan women under the Taliban. The Senate has passed Boxer resolutions calling upon the United States not to recognize the Taliban because of human rights abuses against women. In October 2001, Boxer successfully authored a resolution calling for the inclusion on women in the temporary government of Afghanistan.

She serves on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Commerce Committee, and Foreign Relations Committee. She graduated from Brooklyn College in 1962 with a degree in economics and has worked as a journalist and a stockbroker.

Dominican University of California is an independent, international university located in San Rafael, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dominican enrolls over 1,700 students in graduate and undergraduate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business, health sciences, and education. Joseph R. Fink, Ph.D. has served as president of Dominican University of California since 1988.

The commencement ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. at Forest Meadows Amphitheater.
