Former U.S. Senator George J. Mitchell of Maine -- who served in the Senate for 14 years (including six years as Senate Majority Leader) and more recently chaired the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland -- will deliver the main address at Dartmouth's 1999 Commencement exercises. Commencement will be held Sunday, June 13 beginning at 10 a.m. on the Dartmouth Green.

At Commencement, Dartmouth will confer honorary degrees on Mitchell (Doctor of Laws); former Spelman College President Johnnetta Cole (Doctor of Laws); Nobel-prize winning neurologist and biochemist Stanley B. Prusiner (Doctor of Science); physiologist, educator and former Dartmouth Medical School Dean Stephen Marsh Tenney , DMS '44 (Doctor of Science); author Freya von Moltke (Doctor of Humane Letters), a member of the German resistance to Hitler; and Tony Award-winning theater director Jerry Zaks '67 (Doctor of Fine Arts).

Besides Mitchell, speakers for the event will include Dartmouth President James Wright and the College's valedictorian (who is usually announced the week of Commencement, after final grades are calculated).

Dartmouth's 1999 Commencement exercises will conclude not only the 229th academic year of the College but also James Wright's first year as President of the institution. President Wright has decided to add a new facet to Commencement Weekend by hosting a reception for the honorary degree recipients. Free and open to the public, the reception will be held on Saturday, June 12 from 5-6 p.m. in the main corridor of Baker Library.

At Commencement, Dartmouth usually awards approximately 1,500 degrees (including about 1,000 bachelor's degrees, the rest being master's or doctoral degrees in the Arts and Sciences or from one of the College's three professional schools: Dartmouth Medical School, Thayer School of Engineering and the Tuck School of Business). The ceremonies regularly draw an audience of several thousand.
