Newswise — For over a decade, Saint Joseph's University and Delaware County Community College have enjoyed an informal partnership that has united both academic communities. This semester, the institutions finalized an official agreement that allows DCCC students to seamlessly transfer credits to SJU for select four-year degrees.
"Now that we have formalized this agreement, we are excited and proud to continue our relationship with Delaware County Community College," said Associate Provost Paul DeVito, Ph.D., at the signing ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 12.
As part of the dual admissions agreement, DCCC graduates are guaranteed admission into Saint Joseph's University College for Undergraduate Continuing Studies for select bachelor degree programs after filling out a "dual admission intent" form on or before completing 45 transferable credits. The transferring students must also achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5.
Transferring students may earn their degrees in the following areas of study: a bachelor of science in business administration, criminal justice, elementary education, elementary/special education, health administration, liberal and professional studies, legal studies, psychology and sociology, or a bachelor of arts in English communications.
DCCC transfer students are also eligible to receive merit scholarships based on their GPA and the number of credits in which they enroll. These renewable scholarships are available for students attending on a part-time or full-time basis. There are currently 100 students from DCCC enrolled in the University College and undergraduate day division program.
On Wednesday, Dec. 12, SJU and DCCC commemorated the agreement with a signing ceremony on SJU's campus. At this event, DCCC's Provost Virginia Carter praised the agreement, stating partnerships such as these support DCCC's mission and participation in "Achieving the Dream- a multi-year national initiative to help more community college students succeed by earning degrees or certificates or transfering to other institutions to continue their studies."
Provost Carter stated that the implementation of this agreement presents a unique opportunity for both institutional administrations to continue working together to bridge the educational needs for Delaware and Chester County residents from the two- to four-year environment.
In the fall of 2007, Saint Joseph's University College began offering accelerated degree completion programs at Delaware County Community College's Southeast Center, Sharon Hill, Pa. and at the Chester County Economic Development Council in Exton, Pa.
