Newswise — U.S. space exploration policy will be the topic of debate by representatives of American Presidential hopefuls, Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama.

The event on Thursday, August 14 is being held by The Mars Society as part of their 11th Annual International Mars Society Convention being convened in Boulder, Colorado at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

This important airing of views regarding the future of the U.S. space program is free and open to all.

-- Apollo 7 Astronaut Walter Cunningham will be representing Senator McCain.

-- Lori Garver, a former NASA Associate Administrator for policy and plans, will be representing Senator Obama. The debate will begin at 7:30 pm (MDT) at the University of Colorado, Boulder's University Memorial Center (UMC), Glenn Miller Ballroom at the corner of Broadway & Euclid in Boulder on the CU Campus.

Moderator for the U.S. space policy discussion is Leonard David, Research Associate for the Secure World Foundation and Special Correspondent for SPACE.com and Space News newspaper.

"As both parties gear up for the election, this is a perfect opportunity for them to articulate their space policies," said Mars Society Executive Director Chris Carberry. "Both candidates have been making statements regarding space policy lately, and we're hoping this debate will help clarify their respective plans and what they hope to accomplish."
