STUDENTS LEARNING AVALANCHE ASSESSMENT ON SPRING BREAK

CANTON, N.Y. - Instead of the traditional sojourn south for spring break, a group of students at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, will head north, to the Chic Choc Mountains of eastern Quebec for deep-snow backcountry skiing.

The St. Lawrence Outdoor Education Program is sponsoring a trip for seven students to the Chic Choc Mountains, on the Gaspe Peninsula. The students, with Outdoor Education Director Phil Royce, will ski during the day and stay in a woodstove-heated cabin at night. The trip includes instruction in winter route-finding, avalanche assessment, avalanche search-and-rescue, advanced telemark instruction, cold-weather injury prevention and group safety and risk management. It will take place March 13 through 20.
