Newswise — They’ve examined green energy by developing new batches of biodiesel fuel. Created and launched hand-built rockets on the beaches of Lake Superior. Studied wolves and moose on uninhabited Isle Royale National Park.

Who are they? Not the top scientists and researchers you might be picturing. They’re the middle and high school kids participating in Michigan Technological University’s Summer Youth Programs.

Youth Programs at Michigan Tech are weeklong summertime explorations that introduce students to the exciting possibilities of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and help them develop new skills through laboratory, classroom and field experiences.

The program includes more than 50 explorations in fields such as outdoor and environmental studies, science and technology, computers, engineering, business, and arts and human sciences. Students come from across the nation to learn to program a computer, build a rocket, dissect a lung, solve a crime scene, backpack through a scenic wilderness area, cast molten metal, and more.
