The prospect of a possible war with Iraq may frighten many children. "News about war can be especially alarming for young children," said UAB child development expert Jerry Aldridge, Ph.D. Aldridge offers this advice for parents to help young children cope with the current military crisis: Consider the child's level of development. "Young children, for instance, often only have a limited understanding about war. So providing them with a lot of facts won't be helpful. Instead find out what questions they have and encourage them to share their feelings. Parents should also be prepared to clarify any misconceptions a child may have, such as a belief that 'the bad people' will come and get them."
