The Black Experience In Europe

While Black History Month recognizes the black experience in the United States, a growing number of writers are examining slavery and the black experience in Europe, says UAB Associate Professor of English Virginia Whatley Smith, Ph.D. Smith says this trend is helping educate readers about slavery's impact on countries like Britain and France. "We've tended to look only toward Africa and the predominately black countries where slaves were sent. But we must now revisit Europe, which was the great colonialist." Smith says that in recent years black writers and critics in Britain have been especially active in telling their stories of slavery and its impact, thus redefining the black experience and giving readers a more global perspective.
