The U.S-German relationship: Can it be salvaged?

As the United States moves closer to war with Iraq, the rift between the United States and Germany has grown wider, doing damage to this historically important relationship. What will happen if the United State does invade Iraq? How bad will be the damage to the U.S.-"German relationship? Will it last? How might the United States and Germany repair the dialogue, if and when Saddam Hussein is removed from power?
