Newswise — A University of Iowa free speech expert is available to discuss the Supreme Court decision expected this week in a case that could overturn limits on campaign spending by some organizations.

Randall Bezanson is professor of law at the University of Iowa who has written widely about free speech, freedom of the press and other First Amendment issues. Among his books are “How Free Can Speech Be?” and “How Free Can The Press Be?” One of his legal research specialties is campaign speech.

In the Supreme Court case, Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission, the Court is considering whether laws that limit or prohibit groups such as corporations, trade associations or labor unions from running election campaign commercials are unconstitutional.

The decision could also invalidate all or parts of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform Act of 2002.
