U.S. and China Cooperate on Boiler Certification Program

ASME International (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and the Ministry of Labour of The Peopleís Republic of China have agreed on a program of joint assessment of boiler and pressure vessel manufacturers.

A letter of cooperation was signed recently at a workshop sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. Under the terms of the agreement, both parties will work at a means for bringing together hitherto independent conformity assessment practices regarding the certification of boilers and pressure vessel systems.

ASME, the developer of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, accredits companies in the United States and throughout the world. Chinaís Ministry of Labour licenses boiler and pressure vessel manufacturers in its own country, as well as manufacturers importing equipment to China.

The new program will synergize and streamline the separate activities and create a mechanism by which joint assessments may be conducted. ASME and the Ministry of Labour hope to establish a system through which companies can apply to either organization for a joint assessment that would lead to accreditation/licensing by both organizations.

Primary beneficiaries of the new system include U.S. boiler manufacturers wishing to export products to the P.R. of China.

The 125,000-member ASME International is a worldwide engineering society focused on technical, educational and research issues. ASME conducts one of the worldís largest technical publishing operations, holds some 30 technical conferences and 200 professional development courses each year, and sets many industrial and manufacturing standards.
