With the U.S. presidential elections just six weeks away, topics such as voter ID laws, the impact of social media on the electorate, and security and defense policies are dominating the headlines and political conversation.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has several experts who can address issues that are sure to impact this year's elections.

Here are the UT professors and their areas of expertise:

•Michael Gant, a professor of political science, can discuss political polling, campaign strategy, voter decision-making and voting trends.

•Nick Geidner, assistant professor of journalism in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, can discuss the candidates' use of online technologies, such as websites, social media and mobile applications and the effects those technologies have on the electorate.

•Nathan Kelly, an associate professor of political science, can discuss the effect of politics on income inequality—how the choices voters make at the ballot box can increase or decrease the income gap between the rich and the poor.

•Anthony Nownes, a professor of political science, can discuss interest groups, lobbying, American politics and the Electoral College, money and politics, PACs and super PACs. He can also discuss the impact of celebrity endorsements on elections.

•Brandon Prins, associate professor of political science and a Global Security Fellow at the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, can discuss U.S. foreign policy and contrast President Barack Obama’s and presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s security and defense policies.

•Jon Shefner, sociology professor and political sociologist, can talk about policy, voting rights and policies and political change in the U.S. Shefner's research has a special focus on Latin America and can speak about voter ID laws and the importance of the Hispanic vote in America.

•Adrienne Smith, an assistant professor of political science, can discuss women in politics, policymaking and the female vote.--
