Muna Ndulo, an expert on African culture and politics, Professor of Law at Cornell University and director of Cornell’s Institute for African Development, notes that the tragic attack on a Kenyan shopping mall highlights the wider threat of state collapse.
Ndulo says:
“The attack on the mall in Kenya by Somali based al-Shabab Islamist militants underscores the fact that state collapse is one of the major threats to peace, stability and economic development in the world.
“The consequences of a failed state cannot be contained in one country or one region of the world. These events should serve as a wakeup call to the world to help Somalia consolidate peace and stability. With the adoption of a new constitution in Somalia last year and its implementation, the chances to consolidate peace have never been greater since the collapse of the Somali state in 1992.”
