Newswise — The massive recall of over 9 million children's toys has parents and children equally angry and demanding an explanation. Like the mischievous character Swiper, from the popular children's show Dora the Explorer, parents around the country are swiping recalled toys from their children's toy boxes as they sleep. Toys are just the latest in a slew of recalls with the "Made in China" label. Nancy Childs, Ph.D., a professor at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, says that increasing pressure to manufacture goods at a low cost is to blame.

"When developing nations are suddenly global suppliers, often their internal processes haven't matured as quickly as their economic opportunities," said Dr. Childs. "When you drive things to the lowest possible price in a developing economy with minimum standards, this will happen. This pursuit and putting a priority on lowest price does have a tipping point."
