Newswise — Headlines about immigration and terrorism have thrust the United States' borders into the spotlight, but the journalists covering these regions say the stories in popular media barely scratch the surface of the events and issues occurring on the borders.

Alfredo Corchado, a correspondent for the Dallas Morning News; Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sandra Dibble of the San Diego Union Tribune; and Andrew Selee, director of the Mexico Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.; will highlight the importance of digging deeper into these stories during a panel discussion at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Corchado, a 1987 UTEP graduate, Dibble and Selee will discuss their contributions to "Writing Beyond Boundaries," a bilingual collection of stories recently published by the Mexico Institute, as well as their experiences reporting from on the border.

A second panel consisting of UTEP communications professors will discuss other portions of the book as well as the implications for future journalists.

Sponsored by the Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies in conjunction with UTEP's Department of Communication, the event is free and open to the public. The center is named after news veteran Donaldson, a 1955 UTEP (then Texas Western College) graduate, and capitalizes on its border location to provide students from the United States and Mexico research, internship and learning opportunities. The center houses the Ruben Salazar Spanish Language Media program which educates undergraduates in Spanish print, radio, television and web-based media.

The University of Texas at El Paso, a major urban research university, is committed to the ideals of access and excellence. Uniquely positioned in the heart of the U.S.-Mexico border region, UTEP ranks second among UT System academic institutions in research spending -- nearly $35 million a year -- and ranks third in the nation in awarding bachelor's degrees to Hispanics. Ninety-one years after its founding, UTEP is experiencing record enrollment of more than 19,000 students.
