Newswise — Florida Atlantic University recently announced the 2007 "Researchers of the Year" at its Honors Convocation. Each year, FAU's University Research Committee selects FAU faculty to be recognized by the University for their outstanding research, scholarly and creative contributions. Awards are presented at the academic ranks of full professor, associate professor and assistant professor in two categories: sponsored and project-oriented research, and creative and scholarly activities research. This year, the University Research Committee selected four of the nominees for these awards.
"Florida Atlantic University is proud of our world-class faculty and researchers who are making significant contributions in numerous areas, including science, engineering, and the arts and humanities. This important program enables us to recognize these outstanding researchers and scholars each year," said Dr. Larry F. Lemanski, vice president for research at FAU.
2007 Researchers of the Year:
Professor, Sponsored/Project-Oriented Category " Jie Wu, Ph.D.
A preeminent authority in the fields of wireless networks, sensor networks and parallel processing, Dr. Jie Wu has published over 300 research articles in these fields and is currently a Distinguished Research Professor of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at FAU. In 2006, Wu was awarded the "Outstanding Overseas Young Researcher Award" by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He also serves as the chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Technical Committee on Distributed Processing. Recently, Wu was selected by the US National Science Foundation as program director for the networking technology and systems program, and he is now splitting his time between Arlington and Boca Raton. Wu earned his Ph.D. in computer engineering at FAU, and his MS and BS in computer science at Shanghai University of Science and Technology in China.
Professor, Creative and Scholarly Category " Allan Barsky, J.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Allan Barsky is professor in the School of Social Work in the College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs. Barsky's accomplishments in 2005-2006 include the publication of three educational textbooks, two peer-reviewed journal articles, two book chapters, two professional encyclopedia entries and six peer-reviewed conference presentations. The titles of the three books are: "Conflict Resolution for the Helping Professions," "Alcohol, Addictions, and Other Drugs," and "Successful Social Work Education: A Student's Manual." Barsky received his Ph.D. in social work from the University of Toronto, his MSW from Yeshiva University in New York and his Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto. This January, Barsky was appointed to the National Ethics Committee of the National Association of Social Workers. Barsky was also selected as the "Distinguished Teacher of the Year" for his college in 2005.
Associate Professor, Sponsored/Project-Oriented Category " Yoshimi Shibata, Ph.D.
Dr. Yoshimi Shibata is associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Science in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science at FAU. Shibata is an immunologist who has focused his research on macrophages, cells that are essential for the host defense mechanisms. Born and raised in Japan, Shibata completed his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Yamagata University, and then conducted Ph.D. work in the Department of Bacteriology at the Tohoku University School of Medicine in Sendai, Japan. After post-doctoral and faculty appointments at East Carolina University, he assumed his current position at FAU in 2003. Shibata's recent research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense with a total of $2 million in grants. Most recently, Shibata has received a Bankhead-Coley Biomedical Research grant for $500,000 from the Florida Department of Health for cancer research.
Assistant Professor, Sponsored/Project-Oriented Category " Mihaela Cardei, Ph.D.
Dr. Mihaela Cardei is assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at FAU. She has been actively involved in cutting-edge research and publications in the areas of wireless networking, wireless sensor networks, combinatorial optimization in wireless networks, network protocols and algorithm design. During her first three years at FAU, Cardei has excelled in her research activity by generating external funding, publishing in prestigious journals and conferences, and for her service as a student advisor. Cardei is the recipient of a coveted NSF CAREER award (2006-2011) on her project on optimization problems in wireless sensor networks design and applications. She has co-authored 17 journal publications, 15 conference papers and 10 book chapters. Cardei earned her Ph.D. and MS in computer science from the University of Minnesota and her MS and BS also in computer science from Politehnica University of Bucharest in Romania.
