American Association of Neurological Surgeons To Hold 68th Annual Meeting in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (April 10, 2000) -- The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) will hold its 68th Annual Meeting April 8 to 13, 2000, at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California. The meeting will host more than 6,000 attendees, with approximately 3,000 medical professionals including neurosurgeons, neurosurgical residents, neuroscience nurses, clinical specialists, physician assistants and allied health professionals.

The AANS Annual Meeting is the largest gathering of neurosurgeons in the world. The meeting focuses on the latest research and technological advances in the field.

Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system, brain, spinal column and spinal cord and includes brain tumors, severe head injuries, stroke, aneurysms and pain management.

The Scientific Program, which includes 43 practical clinics, 18 scientific sessions, 129 oral abstract presentations, 550 poster presentations and 688 technical and institutional exhibits, (representing over 180 companies), begins on Monday, April 10. Some of the research topics to be highlighted during the meeting include exciting advances in stem cell therapy for the treatment of spinal cord injuries and brain tumors; radiosurgery as a treatment for pituitary tumors; new treatment for brain metastases; cocaine use and its impact on stroke; traumatic brain injury; robot-assisted microsurgery; and the use of pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation to improve outcomes in cervical fusion.

The first major presentation of the meeting will be a special lecture by W. French Anderson, MD, an international expert in the field of molecular genetics who led the team of researchers that performed the first approved human gene therapy trial, will deliver a thought-provoking presentation entitled, "Human Gene Therapy."

Other featured speakers include: Doris Kearns Goodwin, an acclaimed historian and Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author, who will deliver the Cushing Oration on the topic, "Leadership in the New Millennium;" John A. Jane Sr., MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville), Editor of the Journal of Neurosurgery and 2000 Decade of the Brain Medalist, will speak about "The Orbit and Paranasal Sinuses-the Role of the Neurosurgeon;" Victor Fuchs, PhD, Henry J. Kaiser Jr., Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics and Health Research and Policy at Stanford University, will conduct a special socioeconomic symposium focused on, "The Future of Medicare;" and John E. Wennberg, MD, Director of the Center for Evaluative Clinical Sciences at Dartmouth Medical School and co-founder of the Foundation for Informed Medical Decision Making, will discuss neurosurgical outcomes.
