Newswise — Allen Browne, MD (43206), has been appointed surgeon of the Bariatric Program and General Surgery at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Browne will assist with the surgical activities for the Bariatric Program in the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition at Nationwide Children's. Dr. Browne will also have an appointment at The Ohio State University as an associate professor of Clinical Surgery.
Together with Dr. Marc P. Michalsky, surgical director of the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition, and Dr. Steven Teich, director of Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Browne will assist in the continued development of various weight management strategies utilizing bariatric procedures in the morbidly obese pediatric population. The bariatric program at Nationwide Children's currently serves as an investigational site for several large clinical research trials examining the outcomes of morbidly obese adolescent patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
"The addition of someone with the experience and stature of Dr. Allen Browne to the Bariatric team at Nationwide Children's Hospital is a measure of the growing national presence of our program," said Robert Murray, MD, director of the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition.
Dr. Browne's specific areas of focus at Nationwide Children's include the development of weight management techniques for morbidly obese children and educating families about the dangers of obesity.
Dr. Browne's clinical and research interests are in the safety and efficacy of adjustable gastric bands in weight management programs for morbidly obese adolescents. He also is interested in surgical and medical education, clinical care of the pediatric surgical patient and video-assisted minimally invasive surgery in infants and children.
Dr. Browne comes to Nationwide Children's from the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago where he was clinical director of the New Hope Pediatric and Adolescent Weight Management Project and a pediatric surgeon. He was also a pediatric surgeon at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr. Browne received his medical degree from George Washington University and finished his general surgery residency at the Maine Medical Center. He continued on to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Nationwide Children's Hospital where he completed his pediatric surgical fellowship (1982). Dr. Browne is a board-certified pediatric surgeon (2003), a board certified general surgeon (2002) and is board-certified in surgical critical care (1990). He has more than 10 publications and has written nearly 20 chapters and posters.
Dr. Browne also served in the U.S. Army as a general medical officer at the 547th General Dispensary at the 7th Army Training Center in Grafenwohr, West Germany (1972-75). Following his service in the army, he returned to the U.S. and continued his education to become a pediatric surgeon.
