For Immediate Release

AOFAS to hold 13th Annual Summer Meeting in Monterey, California

A presentation revealing a correlation between smoking and delayed wound healing, and a study identifying surgical risk factors associated with complications or poor outcomes in diabetic patients will be among the highlights of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society's (AOFAS) 13th Annual Summer Meeting at the Hyatt, Monterey, July 17th to 19th, 1997.

This national meeting features scientific sessions on trauma, tarsal arthodesis, biomechanics, neuropathy and other diabetic foot disorders, soft-tissue pathology of the ankle, heel pain, ankle sprains and fractures, Achilles tendon injuries, flatfoot, neuromas, and ankle fusion.

Expert speakers and researchers will report on a variety of topics including a review of patient satisfaction and healthcare costs of the surgical repair of hindfoot fractures in industrial workers, a 49 year follow-up study of the successful pain reduction of total ankle fusion (triple arthodesis), and a study demonstrating the use of internal fixation (using screws to secure fractured bones) in bunion surgery is no more effective -- but definitely more expensive -- than using no fixation at all.

Press releases for the above topics will be mailed to the media and posted to our Web site in early June. For further information about any of the studies to be presented at this meeting or to contact a presenting physician, please call Doug Cavarocchi at the AOFAS Office at 800.235.4855.

Dedicated to advancing research and educational objectives in foot and ankle care, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society is the leading medical organization for orthopaedists with a special interest in foot and ankle problems. -
